Scarlett Johansson insists she “worked her a*s off” for success. The 25-year-old actress has hit back at critics who claim she only won her Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Broadway show A View From the Bridge because of her Hollywood fame, insisting she was cast for her abilities. She said: “A lot of my friends who are struggling actors are going through the same thing. But I can’t apologise for it. I have worked my a*s off to get to where I am so I understand that struggle. “For me, it’s more about hiring the right person for the job. If somebody is cast because they are a name but they’re not right for the job, well, it’s very frustrating.” The Lost In Translation star’s win has inspired an internet campaign group, “Give The Tonys Back To Broadway”, and though she understands the frustration from theatre actors, Scarlett insists Hollywood stars bring their own assets to the stage. She explained to Broadway World: “The actors we’ve seen this season that we recognise from film — Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Liev Schreiber and Catherine Zeta-Jones, etc. — have not only made a huge impact on ticket sales but have given tour de force performances and all started their careers as stage actors, dedicating themselves to making an impression in the theatre. “This goes to show that actors are actors, whatever the outlet, and with perseverance and drive, can cross the boundaries of the medium.”

Scarlett Johansson celebrated her victory at the Tony Awards by heading out for a night of karaoke after picking up her prize. The Lost In Translation actress was handed a trophy for her Broadway debut in A View From The Bridge at the awards show, which celebrates the best in New York theatre. But Johansson shunned the glitzy afterparty for a night out with her friends in the Big Apple, heading to Manhattan bar Cornerstone for the venue’s weekly karaoke party. The actress, who remained in her red carpet frock, belted out hits including Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind, Kenny Rogers’ Lucille and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, staying out until 4am, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.

Scarlett Johansson was stunned during a recent performance of Broadway’s A View from the Bridge, after a crazed fan rushed through security and tried to invade the stage pretending to be her pal. The movie star made her Broadway debut in the Arthur Miller play in January, playing a 17-year-old girl in 1950s New York with Liev Schreiber as her uncle. And she admits she’s shocked by the stunts some overzealous fans will pull in live theatre to get close to the stars. She says, “People do weird things. We were in the middle of the second scene of the first act and we’re introducing the characters and I saw in the corner of my eye something shiny falling through the audience and I thought it was maybe a light or something. “It turns out it was some derelict with a blue guitar running to the stage and turns out he said he was a friend of mine.” Johansson refused to let the fuss affect her performance and continued with the show – and she’s proud she reacted like an old theatre professional. She adds, “I think half the audience didn’t even realised it happened. The show went on.”

Scarlett Johansson sweats on the red carpet. The Iron Man 2 actress admits nerves often get the better of her, no matter how much she is looking forward to making an appearance at a formal event. She said: “I like the getting ready part. I like the hair and the make-up and the pretty dress. It’s just getting on the red carpet I just instantly flop sweat. “It’s a weird chemical reaction I have somehow to the red carpet. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s just the carpet itself.” The 25-year-old star – who is married to actor Ryan Reynolds – admits she suffers a similar reaction when singing live and is even considering taking drastic action to curb her excessive perspiration. She added to US TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres: “I flop sweat then too. I probably need a shot to stop that.” Flop sweat is nervous perspiration caused by a fear of failure before an audience.
