Josh Whedon has hinted that the Black Widow is not going to be the only female character in The Avengers. The Avengers cast has been assembled and Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L Jackson are all going to join forces as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Nick Fury and they will be joined by Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. But she will not be the only female in the ensemble cast according to the movie’s director Josh Whedon. Talking to the Sunday Herald-Sun [via Moviehole] he said, “It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger. But she will not be the only female character.” However Whedon didn’t go further to suggest who would be joining Johansson on the cast list but characters such as Pepper Potts from Iron Man, Peggy Carter from Captain America and Jane Foster from Thor could mean an appearance from Gwyneth Paltrow, Hayley Atwell and Natalie Portman. Speaking about working on the adaptation Whedon said: “It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. “You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of the Avengers titles.”

Scarlett Johansson is set to go up against Angelina Jolie! Sources say the Iron Man star will battle the Salt actress to play Marilyn Monroe in a movie about the late screen siren. “Angelina has a chance but the favorite right now is Scarlett Johansson,” said one Hollywood insider. “She’s younger and has the right look as well as the talent to pull off what is a hugely challenging role.” Reports earlier this week claimed Jolie would play Monroe in a big screen adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe. It was also claimed that George Clooney had been lined up to play Monroe’s close friend Frank Sinatra.

Scarlett Johansson is reportedly set to land the lead role in the upcoming remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. According to the New York Daily News, the actress auditioned for the role of Lisbeth Salander, a heavily-tattooed computer hacker with a penchant for body piercings, last week. Director David Fincher was said to be impressed with Scarlett, who apparently managed to pull off a flawless Swedish accent. “If he doesn’t go with an unknown, Scarlett is a shoo-in for the role,” a source said. “And she wants it bad.”

Scarlett Johansson is to play Vince Vaughn’s lover in a new movie. The 25-year-old actress is reportedly in talks to appear in Old St. Louis as a secretary who is secretly romancing a travelling salesman. In the comedy drama, Vince’s divorced businessman character tries to combine his latest cross-country work trip with an attempt to reconcile with the teenage daughter he rarely sees. Kick-Ass actress Chloe Moretz is rumoured to be in the frame to play the daughter. However, if Scarlett does sign up for the role, it could put her rumoured appearance in Gravity in doubt as there would be a likely schedule clash, with both slated to begin production in October. It has now been claimed that Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively may take over the female lead in the space-set thriller, starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. if Scarlett drops out of the project.

Joss Whedon has announced the cast for The Avengers. The director took to the stage at the Comic-Con event in San Diego on Saturday (July 24), to show the crowd the entire principal cast for the comic book-adaptation movie, including Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Clark Gregg, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman and Jeremy Renner. Whedon told MTV News: “The energy is extraordinary. This is an extremely collaborative, supportive intelligent cast; they’re very sweet. “They’re not challenging each other, they’re just enjoying each other and ready to get into it. And that’s an exciting atmosphere. “I even said, ‘Don’t do it if we can’t make the deal with these actors.’ I desperately wanted this exact crew for the movie and we didn’t know until Saturday morning that it was going to happen, and that’s because of the extraordinarily hard work and trust from people who aren’t me.” Chris Evans will be playing Captain America, Chris Hemsworth will be playing Thor and Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Iron Man, roles they have already signed up for in separate movies. Little is known about the plot of the movie, which is due for release in summer 2012.

After a critically acclaimed Broadway turn earlier this year and another hit movie under her belt (Iron Man 2), Scarlett Johansson has at last picked up a new film gig. The New York Daily News reports that she’ll co-star in Alfonso Cuaron’s planned 3D sci-fi opus Gravity with Robert Downey Jr., who was set for the film a few months back. Johansson has reportedly “verbally agreed” to play “a woman who attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes.” Based on that short description, I would assume that Downey Jr. will be her man back on Earth that she’s trying to get back to. While I felt that Iron Man 2 was among the worst of Summer 2010, I know that both Johansson and Downey are top-quality performers and they deserve a chance to make up for the dismal Marvel sequel with a film of significantly higher quality like Gravity promises to be. Though we now know who will topline the film, little else has been revealed about it’s plot. Most of the attention that Gravity has gotten is a result of the ambitious visual style that Cuaron aims to deliver. The filmmaker has been claiming that it’s “the most ambitious film, technology-wise, since Avatar”, with a mind-blowing 20 minute take rumored to open the movie. The brain boggles over exactly what that 20-minute sequence would look like; with an incredibly talented director like Cuaron at the helm, who hasn’t made a film since 2006′s Children Of Men (which had it’s own set of stunning visuals), this could be a modern masterpiece in the making. Gravity is scheduled to begin shooting later this summer for a tentative 2012 release.

An Education actress Carey Mulligan and Juno star Ellen Page are also reportedly keen to take on the lead role in the new version of the film – based on the novel by Swedish author Stiegg Larsson – with Keira Knightley, Mia Wasikowska and Scarlett Johansson also said to want the part. However, director David Fincher is said to be unsure whether he wants to cast an established star or an unknown actress. A source told website Deadline.com: “David is not sure if he wants to go with an actress of any note or go with an unknown. David’s process is very specific and private. He’s looking for authenticity and a degree of fierceness and believability capable of delivering the intensity that the part on the page calls for.” Brad Pitt is believed to have been offered the male lead in the film. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – a Swedish version of which was released in cinemas earlier this year – is the first in a trilogy, followed by The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

Scarlett Johansson has confirmed she would be interested in playing Courtney Love in a big screen biopic of the rocker’s late husband Kurt Cobain. Movie bosses are currently in talks to bring the Nirvana frontman’s life story to cinemas, with the help of his widow, Love, who will act as an adviser on the project. Love has been talking about the film in recent weeks, announcing she would like to see either Ryan Gosling or James McAvoy to play her late husband, and she’s named Johansson as her favourite to play her in the movie. Now Johansson has addressed the rumours, admitting she hasn’t been approached about the project – but is “intrigued” about the possibility of playing the Hole frontwoman. She tells MTV News, “I know that there is a script. That’s as much as I know about it. I’m a big fan of Courtney’s, and I think she’s very, very talented. But I don’t know anything about the project. I think the idea is interesting and intriguing, but I would have to really wrap my head around it.”

And although movie bosses currently have no plans to expand her character with a follow-up, Johansson is hoping public demand will see her revive her role for a second time. She tells Access Hollywood, “These movies are very fan driven so if the fans like my interpretation of the character, I would be happy to don the cat suit again and, you know, carry the torch. But there is no plan for anything like that. I know that Marvel is very behind this character so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
