Josh Whedon has hinted that the Black Widow is not going to be the only female character in The Avengers. The Avengers cast has been assembled and Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L Jackson are all going to join forces as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Nick Fury and they will be joined by Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. But she will not be the only female in the ensemble cast according to the movie’s director Josh Whedon. Talking to the Sunday Herald-Sun [via Moviehole] he said, “It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger. But she will not be the only female character.” However Whedon didn’t go further to suggest who would be joining Johansson on the cast list but characters such as Pepper Potts from Iron Man, Peggy Carter from Captain America and Jane Foster from Thor could mean an appearance from Gwyneth Paltrow, Hayley Atwell and Natalie Portman. Speaking about working on the adaptation Whedon said: “It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. “You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of the Avengers titles.”

Sources say the Iron Man star will battle the Salt actress to play Marilyn Monroe in a movie about the late screen siren. “Angelina has a chance but the favorite right now is Scarlett Johansson,” said one Hollywood insider. “She’s younger and has the right look as well as the talent to pull off what is a hugely challenging role.” Reports earlier this week claimed Jolie would play Monroe in a big screen adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe. It was also claimed that George Clooney had been lined up to play Monroe’s close friend Frank Sinatra.

Rooney Mara has bagged the female lead role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The 25-year-old actress – whose movie credits include Dare, Nightmare On Elm Street and Youth In Revolt – will play Lisbeth Salander in the eagerly anticipated adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog. New York-born Rooney will star opposite 007 heartthrob Daniel Craig in David Fincher’s film. The 42-year-old James Bond star will also play the male lead in adaptations of the other two novels that complete late author Larsson’s hit Millennium trilogy. The movie will be an English-language remake of the Swedish smash hit film of the same name, which starred Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth.

According to the New York Daily News, the actress auditioned for the role of Lisbeth Salander, a heavily-tattooed computer hacker with a penchant for body piercings, last week. Director David Fincher was said to be impressed with Scarlett, who apparently managed to pull off a flawless Swedish accent. “If he doesn’t go with an unknown, Scarlett is a shoo-in for the role,” a source said. “And she wants it bad.”

The 25-year-old actress is reportedly in talks to appear in Old St. Louis as a secretary who is secretly romancing a travelling salesman. In the comedy drama, Vince’s divorced businessman character tries to combine his latest cross-country work trip with an attempt to reconcile with the teenage daughter he rarely sees. Kick-Ass actress Chloe Moretz is rumoured to be in the frame to play the daughter. However, if Scarlett does sign up for the role, it could put her rumoured appearance in Gravity in doubt as there would be a likely schedule clash, with both slated to begin production in October. It has now been claimed that Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively may take over the female lead in the space-set thriller, starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. if Scarlett drops out of the project.

Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson have announced they will be executive producers of a film about Luna, the young killer whale who once lived in Nootka Sound off Vancouver Island. Reynolds also will narrate the new documentary about the whale, known for his friendly approaches to humans, according to a new website set up about the film. The Vancouver-born actor, who married Johansson last year near the whale’s home, is working with Eric Desatnik, founder of the Environmental Film Festival at Yale, who first drew their attention to the film. The project is to be titled The Whale. They will be reworking the 2007 documentary Saving Luna, by B.C. filmmakers Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit.
The whale appeared to have been separated from his pod and in 2001 began approaching humans and boaters, sparking conflict between those who thought him charming and those who saw him as a nuisance. Conservationists, boaters, fishermen and the provincial government weighed in on what to do about him, before he was killed in 2006 by a boat propeller in heavy weather.
Saving Luna began as an assignment in 2004 to visit Nootka Sound for Smithsonian magazine and went on to be a feature-length documentary. The film won prizes at film festivals around the world and was screened on CBC’s The Passionate Eye last year. However, as an indie film it did not get widespread distribution. The filmmakers have agreed to the reworking to get the story of The Whale out to a wider audience, they told the Vancouver Sun.

She explained: “I don’t have the busiest agenda. I’m just an actress for hire. So I have months and months where I just sit around and wait for jobs. There’s always time for shopping”. For those times she is working, Scarlett talked about her ideal wardrobe for a movie career that takes her all over the world. She said: “When I’m travelling the most important things is to pack items that go easily from day to night. So that could be a nice easy jacket or blazer, a pair of black trousers, boots, and a dress that can be worn with leggings.” Scarlett has previously admitted that she enjoys having fun with fashion but doesn’t think her style is any different to that of other women. She said: “I’m a girl – of course I like getting dressed up. I’m a girlie girl, I like clothes, fashion and all that stuff. It’s fun. “But I think I dress like a regular girl from New York.”
