Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz have all landed nominations for New York City’s prestigious Gotham Independent Film Awards. Hathaway’s movie Rachel Getting Married and Johansson and Cruz’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona are both up for the Best Ensemble Performance award. But the Hollywood beauties have been overshadowed among the nominees by filmmaker Lance Hammer, whose drama Ballast is up for four prizes at the ceremony on December 02, 2008. Ballast picked up nods in the Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, Breakthrough Actor and Best Ensemble Performance categories – just months after stealing the show at the Sundance Film Festival. Cruz will be a winner at the Manhattan awards ceremony whatever happens; as previously announced, she will be honoured with the Gotham Award – the same prize her boyfriend Javier Bardem collected last year. Sean Penn, Gus Van Sant and Melvin Van Peebles will also be honoured at the bash.
Actress Scarlett Johansson will co-host the 2008 Nobel Peace Concert on December 11 in honor of this year’s laureate, Finnish peace mediator and former President Martti Ahtisaari. The other co-host will be announced in coming weeks, said a statement given to The Associated Press ahead of its official release. Last year’s show was hosted by Uma Thurman and Kevin Spacey. “We’re extremely pleased Ms. Johansson will join us for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert,” said the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s non-voting secretary Geir Lundestad. “Her compassion and influence will help us tremendously in our mission of spreading the global message of peace.” Lundestad says the concert, televised in up to 100 countries, is the most popular event on the Nobel calendar. Johansson, 23, will host a program headlined by Diana Ross. It includes Canadian singer Leslie Feist, who performs under the name Feist, American country singer Dierks Bentley, Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, and Nigerian star Seun Kuti, according to a list released last week. Johansson rose to stardom through her role in the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer and won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts best actress award for her role opposite Bill Murray in the 2003 film Lost in Translation. The Nobel concert is held a day after the December 10 Nobel peace awards ceremony. Ahtisaari won the prize for his peace efforts on several continents over several decades.
Scarlett Johansson has criticised the American media’s ’sexist’ treatment of senator Hillary Clinton during her bid for the White House. Mrs Clinton lost out on the Democratic party’s nomination for the presidency to Barack Obama but made history nonetheless in being the first woman to run for the highest office in the US. Speaking to Cosmo Girl magazine, Johansson – a staunch Obama supporter – has lambasted the media’s treatment of the former First Lady. “We still live in a country that’s sexist and racist. Those are issues that we deal with whether we want to ignore it or not,” said the Lost in Translation star. “Seeing how the media portrayed Hillary with unbelievable sexism – some of the things that people were saying were just so overwhelming. You just couldn’t believe the names that they were calling her!” However, Johansson expressed her hope of a change in American attitudes, having encountered a number of politicised college students while touring US campuses. “These kids are just so well-informed and so interested. There were really obscure questions and debates that they wanted to lead – I couldn’t believe it!” she remarked “And it was amazing how many of these kids turned out. I’m 23, and all of these kids are probably between 16 to 24. They’re my peers, so we can all talk on the same wavelength. We’re all connected by the same issues.”
Newlyweds Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds will embark on a romantic European honeymoon in November, according to reports. The couple married in secret in September on a wilderness resort in Reynolds’ native Canada. They haven’t yet found a gap in their busy schedules to celebrate the wedding with a traditional vacation – but have a two week trip planned for next month. First stop will be Paris, France, reports Star magazine. A source tells the tabloid, “(They) also want to visit London and Barcelona, which she fell in love with while shooting Vicky Cristina Barcelona with Woody Allen last summer.”
Scarlett Johansson married Ryan Reynolds at a remote resort on the west coast of Canada. The pair shocked the world by tying the knot in secret last month on September 27, escaping the prying eyes of the paparazzi. And People magazine claims the couple kept the press in the dark by sending just 40 guests text message invitations, and then staging the ceremony at the “rugged, but luxurious” Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, on a nature reserve in British Columbia, Canada. Guests stayed in plush canvas tents at the venue, which can only be reached by seaplane or a 30 minute boat ride. A source tells People, “Scarlett wanted a ceremony with just family and a few select friends. She wasn’t going to let anything interfere with her wedding day. They work hard to keep things private.”
I added many new pictures of Scarlett’s upcoming movie He’s Just Not That Into You. She’s playing Anna and looks extremly beautiful in this movie!
